Leigh Magar embraces
the classic craft of millinery; Each & every
hat is hand made at her studio/shop. The hat shop, previously an
abandoned beauty salon, is fronted by two large window displays filled
with her latest creations. Hats are displayed on shaker pegs along
the side walls & on salvaged sewing tables in the middle of the
room. Just behind the wooden sales desk, & open to the shop,
is her studio. Its is full of old sewing tools & supplies.
She starts with quality materials, such as hand woven straws & hand
dyed felts. Material are collected in buying trips to New York & Europe.
The materials are then hand blocked on new & vintage wooden
hat forms. The crowns & brims are interchanged to create various
shapes & forms. Her collection of hat blocks has expanded to
over 75. She finds them in antique store, flea markets, & from
a supplier in Italy.
After
the hats are shaped, all the trim is hand sewn. The hats are
often adorned with unique
embellishments & trimmings. Trimmings,
feathers, & other accessories are often vintage & one-of-a-kind.
